Getting to Tacoma without a car

Train, regional bus and light rail — and the return trip, which is the part to plan first.

Tacoma is its own city on Puget Sound, roughly 30 miles (50 km) south of downtown Seattle. It is not a Seattle neighborhood, and Seattle's attractions are not in Tacoma.

  1. Leg 1

    Leaving Seattle

    Two rail options and one bus option leave from central Seattle. Sound Transit's Sounder S Line runs between King Street Station and Tacoma Dome Station on weekdays; Amtrak also serves Tacoma Dome Station and runs on more days of the week; Sound Transit's regional express buses run between the two cities as well. Which one suits you depends entirely on the day and time you are travelling, so check the operators before you commit to a plan.

  2. Leg 2

    Arriving in Tacoma

    Trains and most regional buses arrive at Tacoma Dome Station, which is the city's transport hub rather than its centre. From there the T Line light rail continues toward downtown, the theater district and Hilltop, and Pierce Transit buses serve the wider city.

  3. Leg 3

    Getting around once you're here

    The museum and glass district is genuinely walkable: the hot shop, the bridge, the museums and downtown food sit within a short walk of each other, and the T Line covers the uphill stretch to the theater district. The north-end park is further out — a bus ride or a rideshare rather than a walk.

  4. Leg 4

    Getting back to Seattle

    This is the part worth planning first. Weekday train service and evening bus service do not run all night, and the last departure decides how late you can eat in Tacoma. Confirm the final northbound service of your day with the operator, and keep a rideshare as a fallback rather than a plan.

  • Sound Transit

    Regional operator for the Sounder S Line train between Seattle's King Street Station and Tacoma Dome Station, ST Express buses between the two cities, and the T Line light rail within Tacoma. Current routes, timetables and fares are on their site and trip planner.

  • Amtrak

    Amtrak Cascades and long-distance trains serve Tacoma Dome Station, which is also the T Line and regional bus hub. Schedules and tickets are Amtrak's.

  • Pierce Transit

    Local buses around Tacoma and Pierce County, including connections from Tacoma Dome Station toward the north end and the districts.

  • Port of Seattle — SEA Airport

    Official airport information: terminals, arrivals, ground transportation, rideshare and rental-car pickup, and the airport's own transit directions.

  • Washington State Ferries

    State ferry system, including the Point Defiance–Tahlequah sailing from Tacoma. Sailing times and fares are WSDOT's.

Common questions

Is there a train from Seattle to Tacoma?
Yes. Sound Transit's Sounder S Line runs between Seattle's King Street Station and Tacoma Dome Station, and Amtrak trains also serve Tacoma Dome Station. Days of operation and times differ between the two, so check each operator for the date you are travelling.
Can I see Tacoma car-free in one day?
Yes, if you stay downtown. The glass and museum district plus downtown food works well on foot with the T Line for the hills. Point Defiance at the north end is realistic car-free but needs a bus or rideshare and more time.
How do I pay for transit?
Each operator publishes how to pay — card, phone or their app — on its own site. Do not assume cash is accepted on board.
Is rideshare available in Tacoma?
Yes, the usual rideshare and taxi services operate in Tacoma, which is useful for the north end or a late return to your hotel. Availability and pricing are the operator's, not ours.
