Distances and temperature
Road signs, speed limits and everything local is in miles and Fahrenheit. Tacoma is about 30 miles (50 km) south of Seattle. A pleasant Tacoma summer day is often in the 70s °F (low 20s °C); winter days are usually in the 40s °F (single-digit °C) and wet rather than snowy.
Paying for things
Cards — including contactless phone payments — are accepted almost everywhere, including in museums, restaurants and parking apps. Some small venues and markets still prefer cash. Prices on menus and shelves are shown before sales tax.
Sales tax
Washington adds sales tax at the till rather than including it in the displayed price, so the total is a little higher than the label. Lodging is taxed separately again. There is no national VAT refund scheme for visitors.
Tipping
Tipping is customary in sit-down restaurants and bars, and common for taxis, rideshare and guided tours. It is normal to tip by card at the point of payment. Counter service, museums and transit do not expect a tip.
Transit and fares
Pay transit fares with a card, phone or the operator's app rather than assuming cash is accepted, and check the operator's page for how to pay before you board.
Sound Transit →Driving and parking
Driving is on the right. Rental cars normally require your home licence and a credit card; an international permit may be requested alongside a non-English licence. Downtown Tacoma parking is mostly paid street parking and garages, signed with the hours and payment method on the meter or app.
Emergencies and health
Dial 911 free from any phone for police, fire or ambulance. Medical care is charged, so travel insurance matters; pharmacies are widely available for minor needs.
Opening hours and reservations
Museums commonly close one or two days a week and several close in the late afternoon. Popular restaurants take reservations and can be full at weekends. Always check the venue's own page for today's hours — we link to them from every place page.
Phones and connectivity
US networks use widely supported bands and eSIMs work well here. Free Wi-Fi is normal in cafés, hotels, museums and the airport.
Accessibility
Buses, light rail, museums and most newer buildings are step-free, and accessible parking is signed. Tacoma is hilly between downtown and the waterfront, so check the route as well as the venue.
Entry requirements
Visas, ESTA and border questions are decided by the US government, not by us. Use the official sources before you travel.
