Travel times on monitored routes
Driving to a Tacoma Dome event
The Tacoma Dome sits directly beside I-5 and I-705, so event arrivals and highway traffic interact. Check I-5 and I-705 above before you leave, then allow extra time for parking near the venue.
Traffic, camera, travel time, mountain pass, road weather, toll and ferry information is supplied by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Tacoma Trekker is an independent Tacoma visitor guide and is not WSDOT, the Washington State Patrol or any official transportation agency. Conditions change quickly; check the official WSDOT page before you drive.
Tacoma traffic questions
- Why does I-5 traffic matter so much in Tacoma?
- I-5 is the spine of the region and carries almost every trip between Seattle, Sea-Tac Airport, Tacoma and Olympia. It also feeds I-705 into downtown Tacoma and SR 16 toward Gig Harbor, so a single I-5 incident near the Tacoma Dome or the Nalley Valley interchange changes travel times across the city.
- What is I-705 and when would a visitor use it?
- I-705 is a short spur off I-5 that drops directly into downtown Tacoma, close to the Tacoma Dome, the museum district, Theater District and the waterfront. Most visitors staying downtown will use it on arrival and departure.
- What should I know about SR 16?
- SR 16 leaves Tacoma westbound across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge toward Gig Harbor and the Kitsap Peninsula. The bridge is tolled in the eastbound direction, toward Tacoma. SR 16 also carries traffic to the Point Defiance ferry area via city streets.
- How do I read the traffic states on this page?
- WSDOT flow stations report a reading for each monitored point. Tacoma Trekker shows those readings as traffic moving normally, moderate traffic, heavy traffic, stop-and-go traffic, or no current data, keeping WSDOT's meaning intact and showing the time of the reading.
- How often does this page update?
- Traffic flow is refreshed about every 90 seconds and highway alerts about every two minutes, matching WSDOT's own publishing cadence. Each block shows when it was last checked and when it will recheck.
