Tacoma in One Day: A First-Timer's Itinerary

One day is enough to see why people keep coming back. This route stays tight geographically so you spend the day looking at things rather than parking.

Morning — the waterway and the glass

Start at the Thea Foss Waterway. Walk the esplanade, then cross the Chihuly Bridge of Glass toward downtown; the installed work overhead is free and takes ten minutes to enjoy properly. Then pick your museum: the Museum of Glass if you want to watch the hot shop, the Washington State History Museum if you want the state's story, Tacoma Art Museum for Northwest art and glass.

Midday — lunch above the water

Come up the hill into downtown for lunch along Pacific Avenue or Broadway, or ride Tacoma Link a couple of stops to Hilltop. Both are short moves that do not cost you the afternoon.

Afternoon — Point Defiance or a neighborhood

If the weather is good, drive or bus to Point Defiance Park: old-growth trails, the loop drive with Sound viewpoints, the gardens and Owen Beach. If it is raining, spend the afternoon in Proctor or on Sixth Avenue instead, where the appeal is indoors and close together.

Evening — Ruston Way at sunset

End on Ruston Way. The paved path runs along Commencement Bay with the Olympic Mountains ahead and, on clear evenings, Mount Rainier behind you. Several restaurants sit right on the water; reserve ahead on summer weekends.

If you only have half a day

Do the esplanade, the Bridge of Glass and one museum, then eat downtown. That is a genuinely good half day and leaves the drive to Seattle or Rainier intact.
