A Tacoma day trip from Seattle is short on travel and long on payoff. Here is the practical version — how to get here, and what to do with the day.

It is about 35 miles south on I-5. Outside peak hours the drive is commonly under an hour; morning and late-afternoon commutes can add substantially to that in either direction. Check live conditions before leaving rather than trusting an average.
Amtrak Cascades and Sound Transit Sounder trains link King Street Station in Seattle with Tacoma Dome Station. From there, Tacoma Link light rail runs into downtown, so a car-free day trip is realistic. Sounder service is weekday-oriented and schedules change — confirm current timetables with the operator before planning around them.
Start on the Thea Foss Waterway and the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. Pick one museum — glass, art or state history — and give it real time. Eat downtown or ride light rail to Hilltop. Spend the afternoon at Point Defiance Park if it is clear, or in Proctor if it is not. Finish on Ruston Way.
Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Owen Beach and the Children's Museum of Tacoma make an easier day than the museum district. Confirm hours and admission with each venue.
Leaving Tacoma northbound between about 3pm and 6pm on weekdays is the slowest window. An early dinner here and a 7pm departure is usually faster than leaving at 5pm.
