Best if your trip is mostly urban and short. Keep your nights in Seattle and give Tacoma one full day by car or train. You see the museum district, the waterfront and one neighborhood.
Two or three nights in Seattle, then two in Tacoma. This is the version that works best if Mount Rainier is on your list, because Tacoma is the closer base for the park's Nisqually Entrance and you avoid a long pre-dawn drive from Seattle.
Cheaper, quieter, and still connected: day-trip to Seattle by train, drive to Mount Rainier, take the ferry from Point Defiance toward Vashon. Sensible if you have a car and would rather not park it in downtown Seattle.
A workable split if you are flying into Seattle–Tacoma International Airport:
Driving is the flexible option; rail from King Street Station to Tacoma Dome Station is the relaxed one. Either way, avoid moving during weekday commute peaks on I-5.

Seattle + Tacoma
This is not a rivalry. Seattle gives you a big-city waterfront and Pike Place; Tacoma gives you walkable museums, public beaches and neighborhood food, half an hour down the road.
