This is the classic western Washington route. Tacoma is what makes the mountain day easy rather than exhausting.

Why the order matters
Seattle first, Tacoma second, Mount Rainier from Tacoma. Driving to the park from Seattle means a much longer morning; from Tacoma the Nisqually Entrance is roughly a two-hour drive. Sleeping in Tacoma the night before a park day is the single biggest improvement you can make to this trip.
Days one and two — Seattle
Give the city two days: waterfront and market, then museums and neighborhoods. Then move south rather than day-tripping back and forth.
Day three — Tacoma
Arrive mid-morning. Museum district and the Bridge of Glass, a neighborhood lunch, Ruston Way in the evening. Buy anything you need for the mountain today — food, layers, a full tank.
Day four — Mount Rainier
Leave early. Which park areas are reachable depends heavily on the season: some roads and facilities are open only in summer, and timed-entry or reservation requirements have applied in recent years during peak periods. Check the National Park Service for current road status, hours and any entry requirements before you go, and check WSDOT for the highways getting you there.
Day five — Tacoma, then home
An easy last morning: Point Defiance or Proctor, then north to the airport, which sits between Tacoma and Seattle.
Seasonal reality check
From roughly late autumn to early summer, expect snow at elevation, closed roads inside the park and short daylight. A winter version of this trip is still worth doing — it just has to be planned around what is actually open.
