Your five days

Timings are planning estimates, not reservations. Nothing here is a paid placement, and opening hours, events and park access should be confirmed before you go.

Day 1

Arrival and settling in

Most visitors land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, about 30 to 45 minutes north of the city depending on traffic. Keep this day light and get the practical things done.

AfternoonCheck in downtown or near the waterfront, then walk the closest few blocks to get your bearings.
Early eveningEat near where you are staying rather than driving across the city.
Before bedIf Mount Rainier is on your list, buy the park pass, fill the tank and read the mountain forecast.

Day 2

Downtown, museums and the waterfront

Downtown Tacoma holds the museum district and the waterfront within a compact walk, which makes it the reliable day whatever the weather does.

MorningMuseum district: glass, art and history sit within a few minutes of each other.
MiddayLunch downtown, then walk out along the water.
AfternoonRuston Way or Point Defiance if it is clear; indoor stops if it is not.
EveningDinner in a district you have not seen yet.

Day 3

The districts

Tacoma reads best by district. Pick two, walk them properly, and eat where you land instead of planning every meal in advance.

MorningCoffee and a walkable district: Stadium, Proctor or Sixth Avenue.
AfternoonA second district with a different character, plus a park or viewpoint.
EveningCheck what is actually happening that night before committing.

Day 4

The Mount Rainier drive day

Mount Rainier National Park is roughly two hours southeast of Tacoma and is not in the city. Send your clearest forecast day here and start early.

Early morningLeave Tacoma with food, water and layers already in the car.
Late morningSR 7 through Elbe to SR 706 and Ashford, enter at Nisqually, stop at Longmire.
AfternoonClimb to Paradise. In season, add Reflection Lakes on the Stevens Canyon road.
EveningDrive back to Tacoma and eat in the city; the return is long.

Day 5

Departure

Keep the last morning close to the city and leave room for traffic on I-5 and SR 7.

MorningA short waterfront walk, a market, or one museum you missed.
MiddayHead north to the airport with time in hand.
