Tacoma for First-Time Visitors: What to Know Before You Go

How the city is laid out

Downtown runs along a hillside above the Thea Foss Waterway, with the museums at the bottom near the water and Pacific Avenue and Broadway above. North of downtown, Stadium sits on the bluff. Keep going north and you reach Proctor, then Point Defiance Park at the tip of the peninsula. Ruston Way curves along the bay between them. West of downtown is Hilltop; further west along Sixth Avenue is the city's most casual eating and drinking strip.

Almost everything a visitor wants is within about four miles of downtown.

Where to stay

Downtown puts you within walking distance of the museums, the esplanade and the light rail. Stadium and the area near the Tacoma Dome are the other common choices, the latter useful if you are arriving by train or going to an arena show. Confirm current rates and availability directly with the property.

Getting around

Tacoma Link light rail runs from Tacoma Dome Station through downtown to Hilltop. Pierce Transit buses reach Point Defiance, Proctor and Sixth Avenue. Rideshare is available. A car makes Point Defiance and the mountain easier, but you do not need one to enjoy downtown.

Parking

Street parking downtown is metered on weekdays with garages nearby; neighborhood strips like Proctor and Sixth Avenue are mostly free street parking. Check posted signs, as rules and rates change.

Weather and what to pack

Summers are dry, mild and long; from late autumn through spring expect grey days and steady light rain rather than downpours. Locals do not carry umbrellas — a hooded rain shell and shoes you do not mind getting damp cover almost every trip. Evenings by the water are cool even in July.

What to see first

If you only have a few hours: walk the Thea Foss esplanade, cross the Bridge of Glass, and pick one museum. If the sky is clear, go to Ruston Way or Point Defiance instead and save the museums for a grey day.
