Before you arrive
Pick your entrance and your season
Mount Rainier National Park is roughly a two-hour drive southeast of Tacoma, and it is not in Tacoma. The Nisqually Entrance on SR 706 is the only entrance open to vehicles year round, and it is the natural choice from Tacoma. Sunrise, Stevens Canyon and the Carbon River side follow their own seasonal schedules.
- Plan around the Nisqually Entrance and the Longmire–Paradise road if you are visiting outside high summer.
- Check which roads and areas are actually open on your dates before booking anything.
- Allow a full travel day: park roads are winding and slow, and parking fills early on clear mornings.
