The Tacoma Waterfront: Ruston Way, Thea Foss and Point Ruston

Tacoma's three distinct waterfronts explained, and how to walk, cycle or drive between them.

Unverified

Tacoma sits on Commencement Bay, and its waterfront comes in three distinct stretches that visitors often confuse.

Thea Foss Waterway

The industrial-turned-urban channel below downtown. A paved esplanade runs along it past marinas, the Museum of Glass and Foss Waterway Seaport, with downtown on the bluff above. This is the waterfront you reach on foot from the Museum District.

Ruston Way

A two-mile stretch of shoreline road north-west of downtown, lined with parks, public piers, beaches and waterfront restaurants. It has the clearest views across the bay, and on clear days Mount Rainier appears to the south-east. It is popular for walking, running and cycling.

Point Ruston and Point Defiance

At the far end of Ruston Way, Point Ruston is a newer mixed-use waterfront development with a promenade, and it connects to Point Defiance Park, Owen Beach and the Point Defiance ferry terminal serving Tahlequah on Vashon Island.

Getting between them

The waterfront path along Ruston Way makes the whole northern stretch continuous on foot or by bike. Reaching it from downtown means a climb or a short drive. Parking is generally easier along Ruston Way than downtown.

Practical notes

Puget Sound water stays cold year-round, wind off the bay makes it feel cooler than inland, and restaurant and ferry schedules change seasonally. Check timetables and hours directly.
