One Day in Tacoma: A Practical Itinerary

How to spend a single day in Tacoma on foot, built around the Museum District, the Thea Foss waterfront and one neighborhood stop.

Unverified

Tacoma rewards a short visit because so much of it is walkable. One day is enough to see the Museum District, cross the Chihuly Bridge of Glass, walk a stretch of waterfront and still eat somewhere memorable.

Morning: the Museum District

Start on Pacific Avenue near Union Station. Tacoma Art Museum and the Washington State History Museum sit within a couple of blocks of each other, and the restored Union Station rotunda is worth stepping into for the architecture and the Chihuly glass installed there.

Midday: across the Bridge of Glass

The Chihuly Bridge of Glass carries you over the freeway from the Museum District to the Museum of Glass on Dock Street. The Hot Shop amphitheatre inside is the highlight for most first-time visitors, because you watch glass being made rather than only looking at finished work.

Afternoon: Thea Foss Waterway

From the Museum of Glass you can walk the Thea Foss Waterway esplanade along the water, with the marinas on one side and downtown rising behind you. Foss Waterway Seaport sits along the same walk if you want a maritime detour.

Evening: pick one neighborhood

Rather than doubling back downtown, choose one district for the evening. Downtown and the Theater District keep you close to the Pantages and Broadway. Ruston Way puts you on the water at sunset. The Proctor District and Sixth Avenue feel more residential and local.

Practical notes

Downtown Tacoma is compact but hilly; the free Link light rail line connects the Theater District, the Museum District and the Tacoma Dome. Parking is easier on the waterfront than in the core. Confirm opening days and admission directly with each museum before you plan around them, since seasonal schedules change.
